GOAL NO. 13: CLIMATE ACTION
Climate change is arguably one of the largest threats that face the world today with rising sea levels, extreme weather patterns and increased surface temperatures having the potential to gradually wipe out the entire global population. Natural disasters such as hurricanes and droughts, melting polar ice caps and disappearing coral reefs are all as a result from climate change. Due to highly increased greenhouse gas emissions, over the last 100 years, the world's average surface temperature has increased by approximately 0.6 degrees Celsius. The main contributing factors to global warming are the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. Targets that have been set to achieve action against climate change include educating and raising awareness about climate change to reduce its effects and give an early warning, strengthening resilience against natural disasters and other climate-related dangers, and combining measures against climate change into national planning and polices. By gradually working towards these targets, we can hope to turn climate change into less of a threat as it is today. |
